Dhaka residents face mobile data disruptions

Staff Correspondent

Mobile data services in Dhaka and its surrounding neighbourhoods have been severely disrupted for over 24 hours, hampering access to social media platforms like Facebook and Messenger.

Siam Haque, a resident of Mirpur 10 who works at a private company, told Dhaka Tribune on Thursday morning that he was working from home as quota reform protesters had announced a complete shutdown.

However, due to the disruption, he was without internet access and unable to do office work.

“I have an important meeting at noon. Moreover, our promotional activities on social media are being hampered. My phone phone is suddenly only getting 2G connection,” complained Siam, who is a marketing executive.

The disruption was also reportedly affecting areas such as Nilkhet, Palashi, Science Lab, Dhanmondi, Green Road, Jatrabari and university zones nationwide.

The interruptions began shortly after Tuesday, coinciding with escalating student protests for quota reform, which have turned violent.

No official comments were available from mobile network service operators or the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

Meanwhile, broadband services have remained mostly unaffected.

The disruption reports coincide with violent student protests for quota reform in recent days. Universities have been closed indefinitely, and students have been asked to vacate dormitories.
