Economic Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has said that the government is adopting a stringent approach against market manipulators.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the Bangladesh Institute of Governance and Management (BIGM) in Agargaon, he said that deputy commissioners (DCs) have been directed to take decisive action against extortionists.

He emphasized that reducing extortion will lead to a decrease in the prices of essential goods.

Dr Ahmed also addressed concerns about the garment industry, noting that efforts are underway to stabilize the sector through discussions involving owners, workers, and political parties. He assured that the issue would be resolved swiftly.

On the subject of black money, Dr Ahmed highlighted that the absence of opportunities to legalize illicit funds will enable the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to more effectively catch financial embezzlers.

He assured that stringent measures against major offenders will become increasingly apparent.

Regarding recent tax adjustments, Dr Ahmed said that taxes on potatoes and onions have been reduced. He urged that inspections should not be limited to Kawran Bazar alone but extended to other markets as well.

He criticized the current situation where essential goods change hands multiple times in Kawran Bazar, promising to address this issue.

He provided an update on the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, stating that the commissioning of one unit will be prioritized before beginning work on the second unit.
