Light rain brings some relief for city dwellers

A light rain drenched the capital on Saturday morning, offering city dwellers some relief from scorching heat.

Earlier, the sky turned gloomy since and the much-awaited downpour started around 11am.

Light rain was reported in different areas of the capital including Shyamoli, Jatrabari, Agargaon, Farmgate, Kawran Bazar, Asadgate, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Jigatala, New Market, Kalyanpur and Banglamotor areas.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecast rains across the country in 24 hours from 9am on Saturday.

“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely at many places over Khulna, Barishal & Chattogram divisions, at one or two places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh & Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy falls at places over the country,” said a Met office bulletin.

A mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over the country and it may continue.

Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country, it added.

The country’s highest temperatures were recorded in Netrokona at 38.5 degree Celsius over the past 24 hours till 6pm Saturday while the lowest temperature was in Bandarban at 24.8 degree Celsius.

The axis of monsoon trough runs through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across southern part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends upto North Bay.

Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay. A low pressure area is likely to form over North Bay and adjoining area during next 72 hours, it says.
