All perspectives to be considered: Badiul Alam

Election Reform Commission Chairman Badiul Alam Majumder has said that the commission will work by taking everyone’s opinion into account.

The chief of the commission made the statement while speaking to the journalists before a meeting with the Election Commission Secretariat at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Wednesday afternoon.

He said, “Earlier, we were the speakers, now we are the listeners. You will speak, we will listen. We will hear new ideas from you.”

Badiul Alam added: “Our work will be based on your input and ideas. Especially those of you who cover the election beat have vast experience. We want to take benefit from that experience.”

He said: “Our major task will be to review several laws, including the RPO (Representation of the People Order) related to national elections. We will review every sentence and try to evaluate whether any changes are necessary.”

“Additionally, there are many forms related to elections that we will scrutinize to determine if any changes are needed,” he said.

The chairman of the commission said, “The Election Commission is the most important institution in this reform process. There are also several other institutions linked to the election process. We will make recommendations based on both our and your experiences on how these institutions can be made more neutral and effective.”

On the topic of reserved seats for women in elections, he said, "We will review the participation of women in the electoral system, reserved seats in national elections, and the reserved system in local elections.”

Regarding previous national elections, he said: “We will try to scrutinize past elections and learn from them. We will also try to apply the election experiences of neighboring countries. Additionally, we will hold discussions with all stakeholders.”

He announced that the roadmap for the upcoming election and its timing will be based on the commission’s work.

When asked if there were any plans for dialogue, Badiul Alam replied: “We will seek the opinions of political parties. We will take their proposals and try to gather recommendations from everyone through various methods.”
