Bangladesh ranks 84th among 127 countries with a score of 19.4 in terms of ability to satisfy hunger. Last year, Bangladesh was ranked 81st with a score of 19. Bangladesh is a moderately hungry country.
The Global Hunger Index 2024 was published last Thursday (October 10). Every year, Ireland-based organization Concern Worldwide and Germany-based Welt Hunger Hilfe jointly publish this index.
The index says that the level of hunger in Bangladesh is in the middle level. But still 11.9 percent of people are malnourished. And 2.9 percent of children die before their fifth birthday.
23.6 percent of under-five children are stunted due to malnutrition. In addition, 11 percent of 5-year-old children are not gaining weight according to their height, the index also mentions.
The level of hunger in a country is determined by calculating the level of malnutrition, low weight for height of children under five, low height for age of children under five and infant mortality. These indicators are used to measure hunger levels at any level—global, regional, or national.
Sri Lanka is ranked 56th in South Asia. Nepal's position is 68th. Next is Bangladesh. India's position is 105 and Pakistan's position is 109.
