Winter is tightening its grip on Dinajpur with temperatures dropping to 14.1°C on Sunday morning, accompanied by dense fog and cold winds that have intensified the chill.
Tofazzal Hossain, in charge of the Dinajpur Regional Weather Observatory, said the temperature would continue to decrease throughout November.
“The cold will intensify in December, and late December to early January may bring cold waves,” he added.
Being close to the Himalayas, Dinajpur, like other northern districts, experiences winter earlier than other parts of the country. On Saturday, the district recorded a temperature of 16.8°C, down from 18.8°C on Thursday and Friday.
Dense fog blanketed the district on Sunday morning, though the sun appeared by 8:30am. However, the sunlight lacked warmth, and continuous cold winds since Saturday afternoon have made the weather feel even colder.
Local residents are already feeling the impact.
Surendra Roy, from Kalitala in Dinajpur Sadar Upazila, said: “The cold wind makes the chill more severe. Winter is particularly challenging for elderly people like us.”
Farmers are also expressing concern.
Parash Chandra Sarkar, a resident of Gopalpur in the same upazila, said: “The cold and fog are serious threats to crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and Boro rice. We are worried about the damage this weather may cause.”
