Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed has emphasized the need to separate the judiciary from the executive branch to ensure the rule of law in the country.
He said that on Saturday during a workshop organized for newly-enrolled members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) at the SCBA building.
The chief justice said that a Supreme Judicial Council has been formed for the removal of judges, a power previously held by the parliament.
He also mentioned that a formal proposal has been submitted to the government to separate the judiciary from the executive.
Advising young lawyers to work with integrity, he said: “Institutional autonomy is an integral part of judicial independence. Young lawyers must strive to uphold the dignity of the judiciary. Recent incidents in court premises demand that lawyers act with greater responsibility. The judiciary as a whole will progress through the collaboration of the bar and the bench.”
Before the workshop commenced, attendees observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of Alif, a lawyer from the same batch who was killed in Chittagong. Special prayers were also held for those killed and injured during the protests surrounding the events of August 5.
The workshop was attended by Senior Appellate Division Justice Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury, High Court Justice Farah Mahbub, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, SCBA President Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, and Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum President Advocate Zainul Abedin, among others.
