Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur calls on govt to release political prisoners

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka

Dr Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has urged the government to release the political prisoners who are yet to walk free.

He said: "I urge the current government to release those still in prison. Past autocratic rulers divided the nation, spreading hatred and discord. We want an end to this animosity. All hands must unite at a single confluence, joining together in a vast ocean of unity."

He was speaking on Monday at 8:30am while attending a responsibility conference for party workers in Jhalakathi as the chief guest.

The Jamaat ameer said: "An extremist group has destabilized Bangladesh by murdering a lawyer in the Chittagong court. They wanted to turn Bangladesh into a blazing ruin. However, the responsible Muslims of this country did not fall into their trap. We exercised patience and maintained peace among the people.

“Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians will live together peacefully in this country. No one should need to guard places of worship. We envision a Bangladesh where people will not face humiliation in offices or courts, farmers will get fair prices for their produce, and laborers will receive fair wages for their hard work. If Jamaat comes to power, no one will need to beg for their rights; everyone will receive them with dignity," he added.

He further said: "Abu Sayed is the chief icon and commander of our liberation war. He demanded justice but was shot three times in cold blood. We salute him. We have urged everyone to remain patient. In this Bangladesh, everyone will freely practice their religion, and no one will interfere with any faith. No religious places will need guards in the future, and everyone will feel safe. Oppression from the seat of justice will no longer be tolerated."
