Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, adviser for home affairs, has said the government was unaware of the presence of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader in the country.
His statement came on Tuesday after the International Crimes Tribunal sought an explanation from the police chief within 15 days regarding how Quader left Bangladesh.
The adviser said: “The government did not know that Obaidul Quader was in the country. Otherwise, he would have been taken into custody.”
He added that the morale of the police has already improved, but it will take time for them to fully function as expected.
Jahangir said those who are innocent will not face consequences even if cases are filed against them. However, he emphasized that fugitive police officers who are found guilty will face legal action.
Referring to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Jahangir alleged that she helped 16 MPs from her family leave the country.
He said efforts are underway to bring Hasina back to the country and hold her accountable in court.
The government is maintaining communication with Interpol and any murder case suspect will be arrested as soon as information is obtained, he added.
