Production at all factories in Savar apparel industrial belts resumed on Sunday morning after weeks long labour unrest.
Earlier, the authorities shut 219 garment factories along the Ashulia industrial belts amid workers’ unrest.
Officials and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), found conspiracies behind the unrest and believe “real workers” are not involved in the vandalism of some factories, while labour leaders blame the influence of partisan politics and control over fabric scrap trade for the situation.
According to the BGMEA, export-oriented garment factories in Savar and Ashulia areas went on normal production from Sunday morning.
However, it said that seven factories remained closed and, six have stopped production even after opening in the morning. “But there is no case of labor unrest”.
BGMEA also confirmed that the remaining 394 factories in Savar and Ashulia areas are running normal production activities.
On Saturday night, (September 14), BGMEA announced that all apparel units in Savar will go normal operation from Sunday. BGMEA president Khandaker Rafiqul Islam made this announcement in view of the government's assurance to provide adequate security in the major apparel industrial zone in Savar. Besides, labour union leaders also encouraged workers to return to work.
