A case has been filed against seven former judges of the Appellate Division, including three former chief justices, for violating the Contempt of Courts Act.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the case with the relevant branch of the High Court on Wednesday.
The accused former chief justices are Syed Mahmud Hossain, Hasan Foez Siddique, and Obaidul Hassan.
The other former judges of the Appellate Division are Syed Eman Ali, Mirza Hussain Haider, Abu Bakar Siddique, and Mohammad Nuruzzaman.
According to the complaint, they all abused their power and, beyond their legal jurisdiction and unconstitutionally, violated the Contempt of Courts Act, 1926 by punishing Yunus Ali Akand in the name of contempt of court without giving him any opportunity for a hearing.
On September 27, 2020, they issued a rule for contempt of court and suspended his court practice without providing an opportunity for a hearing, it says, adding that later, on September 12, 2020, they suspended his practice for three months and imposed a fine.
