A Sylhet court today (12 September) granted bail to Lutfozzaman Babar, former state minister for home affairs, in a murder case filed for killing former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria.
Babar sought bail through his lawyer on the grounds of illness, and the court granted the application following a hearing.
Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar issued the order on Wednesday. Zainal Abedin, bench assistant of the court, confirmed the matter on Thursday afternoon.
He said: “In the murder case of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria, former state minister Lutfozzaman Babar applied for bail through his lawyer, and the court approved the application after hearing the arguments.”
Shah AMS Kibria was killed in a grenade attack at a public meeting in Baidder Bazar, Habiganj Sadar upazila, on January 27, 2005.
Following the incident, a case was filed against Lutfozzaman Babar, former Sylhet City mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury, and several senior BNP leaders. BNP leader Arif and other accused are currently out on bail.
However, Lutfozzaman Babar has been serving time in prison after being convicted in various other cases.
