Angry crowd outside the Dhobaura Police Station in Mymensingh on Monday threw eggs at journalists Mozammel Babu and Shyamal Dutta who were earlier detained by local people.
The incident took place around 3pm on the Dhobaura Police Station compound. At that time, the crowd chanted slogans demanding punishment to the detainees.
Policemen took Mozammel Babu and Shyamal Dutta to the Dhobaura Police Station in a microbus under tight security measures. They were seen wearing helmets and bullet-proof jackets. At that time, eggs were thrown at them.
Later, officials of Dhobaura Police Station handed them over to the DB members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Mozammel Babu, Shyamal Dutta and two other persons were detained while trying to enter India illegally through Dhobaura border in Mymensingh.
Dhobaura Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Md Chan Mia said that locals captured the four people along with a private car from Dhobaura-Purbadhala border area around 6:00am. They then informed the police, he said.
Babu is the managing director and editor-in-chief of Ekattor TV, and Shyamal is the former general secretary of Jatiya Press Club.
The other detainees are Ekattor Television senior reporter Mahbubur Rahman and private car driver Selim.
