Former Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon has been put on a three-day remand by a court in connection with a murder case.
The court approved the remand on Tuesday, 17 September, following a request from the police for a five-day remand.
During the court proceedings, Sujon argued that he had never before faced any criminal or political charges. "I was not in Dhaka, and no case has been filed against me in my parliamentary constituency. I am unwell and have been brought here from the hospital," he insisted.
Earlier, on the night of Monday, (September 16), a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) held Sujon.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Saleh Uddin of the DMP's Wari Division confirmed to the media that Sujon was arrested in connection with a case filed at the Jatrabari police station.
Nurul Islam Sujon, who served as the Minister of Railways, was first elected as a Member of Parliament for the Panchagarh-2 (Boda-Debiganj) constituency in the 2008 national election.
He has since been re-elected in 2014, 2018, and most recently in 2024, securing his position as an MP for a fourth consecutive term.
Born in 1956 in the Maidan Dighi area of Boda Upazila in Panchagarh, Sujon studied law and was an active student leader during his time at Dhaka University, serving as the Science Affairs Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and later as a member of the university's Senate.
