Shamim Ahmed, a former organizing secretary of the Chhatra League’s Jahangirnagar University unit, has been beaten to death allegedly by a group of students.
Shamim Ahmed, also known as Shamim Molla, a former student of the university's 39th batch in the Department of History, was subjected to a mob beating on Wednesday and was declared dead hours later after being taken to the hospital.
Ashulia police station Office-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain confirmed the death.
The former Chhatra League leader was allegedly involved in an attack on students during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on the premises of the vice chancellor's residence on the night of July 15.
According to witnesses and university security personnel, Shamim was at a shop near JU’s Prantik Gate at around 5pm. Upon receiving information about his location, a group of university students went there and beat him up.
Later, the university's proctorial team arrived at the scene. At one point, with the help of security personnel, he was brought to the university's security office.
However, at about 7pm, some agitated students assaulted him again there.
Afterwards, Ashulia police arrived there after being informed by the proctorial team.
Shamim resided in an area adjacent to the university, according to students.
Sudipto Shaheen, the head of the university's security department, said that after receiving the news in the afternoon, security officers went to the scene.
He added that they had rescued Shamim and brought him to the proctor's office.
Later, they handed him over to the proctor, who then handed him to Ashulia police.
Dr Selimuzzaman Sujan, an on-duty doctor at Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital in Savar, said when Shamim was brought to the hospital at night, doctors examined him and found that he had already passed away.
“Essentially, he had died before arriving. The exact cause of his death can be confirmed through an autopsy."
JU Proctor Dr AKM. Rashidul Alam said: “The students detained a former Chhatra League leader, accused of attacking students at the VC’s residence on July 15, and handed him over to the proctorial body. After informing Ashulia police, a police team arrived, and we handed him over to them."
Meanwhile, at around 1:30am on Thursday, some students held a protest against the extrajudicial killing, demanding justice and punishment for those responsible.
