A court today placed former deputy commissioner (DC) of the Detective Branch (DB) of Lalbagh Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mashiur Rahman on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the killing of teenager Abdul Motalib in capital's Dhanmondi area during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury passed the order as the police produced him before the court and sought a 10-day remand over the case.
Investigating officer of the case, Inspector Nazrul Islam produced Mashiur before the court after completion of Mashiur’s seven-day remand over another case in connection with the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud in capital's New Market area during the student-people uprising.
The defence lawyer filed a petition seeking the cancellation of the remand and requested bail while the prosecution opposed the bail request.
After hearing arguments from the both sides, the court denied the bail plea and granted seven-day remand for Mashiur.
On the night of September 19, DB police arrested Mashiur Rahman from the capital. On September 20, the court placed him on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the murder of businessman Abdul Wadud in the capital’s New Market area.
Abdul Motalib, 14, was shot dead on August 4 while he was taking part in a procession during the anti-discrimination student movement in city’s Dhanmondi police station area.
Motalib’s father Abdul Matin filed a murder case with the Dhanmondi police station on August 26 over the killing. A total of 176 named and 250-300 unnamed people including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina were accused in the case.
