Prof Badruzzaman new BUET VC, Prof Hasib Pro-VC

Professor Dr ABM Badruzzaman of BUET’s civil engineering department has been appointed as the university’s new vice-chancellor (VC).

Meanwhile, Prof Dr Abdul Hasib Chowdhury of electrical and electronic engineering of BUET has been made the Pro-VC. The Education Ministry issued separate notifications in this regard on Thursday (September 12).

Both of their appointments will be effective from the date of joining. They will serve in their respective positions for the next four years, said the notification.

Prof Badruzzaman, who did his PhD from the University of Virginia, has 68 journal publications. He received research awards of ITEX Gold Medal in 2019 and Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Prize for Water in 2012.

His research interests include aquatic chemistry, heavy metal speciation and transport, surface and groundwater quality modelling, water and wastewater treatment, arsenic contamination, solid waste management, environmental impact assessment and environmental management systems.

Prof Hasib has extensive experience in power system stability, security, reliability, planning, optimisation, operations, control and related studies.

His expertise includes power quality analysis, developing load shedding and islanding schemes to prevent blackouts and working with Grid Code.

He has led important projects such as "Grid Failure Investigation," "Electromagnetic Transients and Stability Studies to Identify the Root Cause of Blackouts," and "Impact Studies on the Bangladesh Power System."
