About 13,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, according to research.

Of the patients, only 10 to 15 percent get screened in the early stages. Besides, the average age of breast cancer in other countries of the world is 45, which in Bangladesh stands at 35 years, says Globocan, an international research organisation on cancer.

Nasrin Panna, 54, started her battle against breast cancer about 10 years ago. Panna thinks that the support of the family is most important to overcome various obstacles throughout the treatment.

“During my illness, my husband stood like a pillar with me. It gave me immense courage. I also had the support of other family members,” she said.

According to the World Health Organization, one in every eight women has breast cancer, and among the female cancer patients in Bangladesh, breast cancer occupies the top spot.

BSMMU Breast Cancer Screening Programme Project Director Professor Dr Ashrafunnesa said, “It is increasing because women do not get treatment on time. They often come late even after realising that there is a lump in the breast.”

Sharing the same experience, Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology Department of the National Cancer Research Institute Hasan Shahriar Kallol said, “There is a lack of information about where to find the right and best treatment for breast cancer.”

About 7,000 breast cancer patients die every year in the country. Health experts have urged public and private organisations to come forward to raise awareness among people.
