Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Nahid Islam has urged mobile operators to lower call rates and introduce unlimited internet packages.
The plea was made during separate meetings with representatives from Robi and Grameenphone on Sunday at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
During the discussions, the adviser emphasized the importance of the interim government successfully navigating its transition period.
He said, “If we can manage this time effectively, the country will rebound and new opportunities will arise. However, failure to do so may result in setbacks.”
Nahid said that the recent protests were focused on employment issues, highlighting that job creation is the primary goal of the current interim government.
“To meet the interests and demands of the youth, it is crucial to lower mobile call rates and launch unlimited internet packages," he added.
The adviser said that now is an ideal time to work in Bangladesh, given the interim government's public support and willingness to undertake initiatives that benefit the country and its citizens.
He assured that the government is actively working to enhance the telecommunications sector.
Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman expressed optimism about the changing environment in the telecommunications industry, noting that open dialogue and feedback are now possible, which is a positive development for the sector.
Rajib Shetty, managing director and CEO of Robi, said that various commission-based layers have emerged in the telecommunications industry over the past 15 years, hindering mobile operators' profit margins.
