The ‘National Citizen Committee’ is making its debut today (September 8), embodying the spit of recent student-led movement that ousted Bangladesh’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

A notification of Anti-Discrimination Students Movement informed that the formal debut of this committee will be at 4:30 pm at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.

“The ‘fascist’ government of Sheikh Hasina fell after the country was roiled by its worst bloodshed in decades during the weeks of protests led by Anti-Discrimination Students Movement,” said the notification sent to the media outlets on Saturday night.

Over 1000 people were killed during the student protests (from mid July to August 5) as members of the law-enforcement agencies indiscriminately opened fire on anti-government protesters across the country.

Sheikh Hasina, 76, Bangladesh’s longest- serving prime minister fled to India on August 5 as anger against her government swelled for the killings of students and general people.

On the same day of her departure and resignation, army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government would be formed to run Bangladesh. The next day, parliament was dissolved by the President and on August 8, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government.

“Bangladesh has to be restructured with the new political language which presented by the students and ordinary people through students uprising. A new democratic constitution will be formulated after exchanging views with various political groups and socio-cultural bodies which are active in the society. Our main goal is to organize the general people, based on a common consensus. To this end, the National Citizen Committee is going to make its debut at 4:30pm on Sunday at the Central Shahid Minar. People of all sections of the society have been invited to participate the event,” read the notification.

Sources said, the National Citizen Committee will accommodate 30-35 members.

Meanwhile, coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement will launch their divisional and district level tour from tomorrow. During the visit, they will hold view exchange meeting with the students who actively participated in the street protests in each district level.

A press release informed that a meeting will be held tomorrow in Munshiganj as the first district of the Dhaka divisional tour.
