Garment workers from Sujan Apparels Limited staged a protest this morning, blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Tongi, demanding overdue wages.
Local law enforcement authorities have been deployed to disperse the protesters and restore traffic flow.
The workers, who have reportedly not received their salaries for two months, refrained from reporting to work and instead gathered in front of Asia Pump, raising various slogans and halting traffic on the busy route.
Simultaneously, workers from another factory under Beximco Company also joined the protests, blocking a portion of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway near Chandra. Their actions have caused significant disruption, leaving commuters stranded and causing delays.
Local law enforcement authorities have been deployed to disperse the protesters and restore traffic flow. However, the situation remains tense as negotiations between the workers and factory management are yet to yield results.
Despite the unrest at these two factories, production in other factories across Gazipur remains unaffected.
One of the protesting workers from Sujan Apparels Limited stated, "We have not received our wages for two months, which is why we are not going to work and are protesting instead."
The blockade has created significant challenges for daily commuters, with many expressing frustrations over the ongoing delays. Authorities are working to resolve the issue swiftly while maintaining law and order.
