Attempt to murder case:  Hanif, 72 others accused in Kushtia

An attempt to murder case has been filed against 73 people, including Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, also a former lawmaker from the Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency.

Jilhajj Hossain, son of Lutfur Rahman of Ghoraighat village in Kumarkhali upazila, filed the case on Thursday afternoon with Kushtia Model Police Station.

Some 40-45 unidentified people have also been made accused in the case.

Among those named as accused in the case are Hanif's cousin Ataur Rahman, general secretary of Kushtia town Awami League; Atiqur Rahman, president of the district Chhatra League; Sheikh Hafiz, general secretary of the district Chhatra League; Ziaul Haque, general secretary of the district Jubo League; Yasir Arafat, president of the district Swechchhasebak League; Manod Chaki, general secretary of the district Swechchhasebak League; Saad Ahmed, former general secretary of the district Chhatra League; and Awami League leader Mominur Rahman Momiz.

Meanwhile, three Awami League leaders, who are also accused in the case, were arrested. All of them were serving as general secretaries of the party in their respective wards under Kushtia municipality.

The arrested were Saif Ul Haq, also Ward-5 commissioner, Nazrul Islam, Ward-6 commissioner, and Anis Quraishi, Ward-11 commissioner.

Anis Quraishi, who was involved in activities with an outlawed party, was also accused in other cases.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) handed them over to Kushtia Model Police Station around 11pm on Thursday.

In a press release, Mohammad Elias Khan, Commander of Kushtia RAB Camp, said they conducted a drive in front of Kushtia municipality in the afternoon and apprehended the three commissioners.

Sources at the Kushtia Model Police Station said the plaintiff stated in the first information report that his younger brother, Tamjid Hossain, participated in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Kushtia on 5 August.

The accused chased and attacked him on Burmese Lane in front of the Kushtia Model Police Station.

On the orders of Awami League leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif, the other accused beat him up with iron rods and sticks, with the intention to kill him.

The attackers also fired shots, one of which hit Tamjid’s left leg. He was rescued from the scene and taken to Kushtia General Hospital.

Mahfuzul Haque Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station, said the arrestees were produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court on Friday afternoon.

The court ordered them to be sent to jail, he added.
