A giant Baghair weighing 39 kg was caught in the Jamuna.

On Monday (September 23) around 8 am, the fish was picked up for sale at Bangabandhu Bridge’s  Paschim Kaddar Bazar in Shirajganj Sadar upazila.

This rare-breed fish amazed hundreds of people at the market.

Locals said, fishermen went to net fish in Jamuna river late on Sunday night. At this time, a giant Baghair fish was caught in the fishermen's net. Later, in the morning the fish was taken to the Kodda Bazar and they asked for Tk 50,000 for the fish.  As no buyer was found to buy such a big fish, it was later cut and sold.

Rafiqul Islam, a fish trader, said that he did not get a single buyer because the fish was too big. That's why we decided to cut and sell. “I am selling the cut fish at Tk 1300 per kg. If the fish is sold completely, I will get about Tk 50,000”.

Baghair is an endangered fish. International Conservation Union of Nature (IUCN) listed the species in their red data book as precariously endangered.
Baghair is available in fresh waters of Bangladesh, India, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sumatra, Borneo and Java. The fish feeds on shrimp, bloodworms, frog and other small fishes. It breeds prior to the rainy season.
