The government will implement a pension scheme for garment workers to ensure their social security, says labour and employment Adviser Asif Mahmud.

For the first time, the government is selling TCB products at lower prices after agreeing to the 18 demands of garment workers.

He said this at the inauguration of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh’s (TCB) sale of products at subsidised prices among the garment workers at Zubair Fabrics factory in Tongi on Wednesday (October 16).

He also urged the owners and workers not to disrupt the production in the garment sector.

For the first time, the government is selling TCB products at lower prices after agreeing to the 18 demands of garment workers. Under this programme, garment workers can purchase 5 kg of rice, 2 kg of pulses, and 2 litres of soybean oil for Tk 470.

Bangladesh boasts the world’s second-largest readymade garment sector employing more than four million people, mostly women, and contributes to over 80 percent of the country’s export earnings.

The workers have been urging the government to introduce a food-friendly programme.

In August, they took to the streets demanding better working conditions, including equal recruitment opportunities for both men and women, salary increases, and reductions in excessive workloads.
