National grid gets another 8mmcf/d gas

Around eight million cubic feet of gas is being fed to the national grid daily from the Sylhet-7 gas well.

Gas can be extracted from the well for 15-20 years.

The supply began at 3:30pm today (November 4). Sylhet Gas Field Limited Managing Director Mizanur Rahman said they already supply 130mmcf/d to the national grid.

He said the well was declared abandoned in 1994. Bapex started drilling this well in July this year and found the gas last month.

With an estimated reserve of 94 billion cubic feet, the well can supply gas for 15-20 years.

Officials said oil extraction started in Haripur Sylhet-7 well in 1986 and continued until 1994. After that, gas was extracted from there.

This time, two layers of gas were found in the old well.

Earlier this year, former state minister for power Nasrul Hamid told Parliament that the daily demand was about 4 billion cubic feet but there’s a shortage of 1 bcf gas.
