BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir says that the ongoing conflict in Chittagong Hill Tracts is part of a conspiracy to destabilise the country.
“A conspiracy has begun to derail the revolution of the students. Even the minorities are being dragged into it. But what has happened [in CHT] is political, not communal,” he said at a views-exchange meeting with Hindu community leaders at the party chief’s Gulshan office on Friday (September 20) evening.
He said these things should not be seen separately. “A similar conspiracy has started there. We must stop this too,” he said.
Fakhrul said the people fought together in 1971 to liberate the country. “Once again, we must stand side by side to protect freedom. The conspirators must be defeated again,” he said.
Apparently, the lynching of a young man in Khagrachhari’s Dighinala upazila on September 18 triggered clashes. Three people were killed and dozens were injured, while many houses and shops were destroyed.
The incident in Khagrachhari allegedly sparked protests in Rangamati, which eventually led to clashes that left one person dead and at least 50 injured.
Rangamati and Khagrachhari’s district administrations have imposed a ban on gathering to prevent the situation from escalating.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Dr Yunus has called for calm and urged the people not to engage in violence. He promised a fair investigation and prosecution of the responsible persons.
