The Sylhet Metropolitan unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expelled two leaders for attempting to hijack a truck smuggling Indian sugar in Sylhet, citing a violation of party discipline.
The disclosure came on Monday in a letter signed by BNP Central Joint Organizing Secretary and Acting President of Metropolitan BNP, Miftah Siddiqui, and General Secretary, Imdad Hossain Chowdhury.
The expelled leaders are Abdul Mannan, 43, general secretary of BNP Ward 26 of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), and Suleman Hossain Suman, 42, general secretary of BNP Ward 25 of SCC.
Imdad Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP, said: "No one will be spared if they commit crimes. Organizational action will be taken against anyone who commits crimes using the party's name."
Earlier, police detained six individuals, including the BNP leader duo, while attempting to hijack a truck carrying smuggled Indian sugar in Osmaninagar.
On Sunday night, with the help of locals, they were arrested near Sadipur Bridge on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway.
During the arrest, two motorcycles, two cars, and the truck loaded with smuggled sugar used for the hijacking were seized.
Other individuals arrested in connection with the sugar smuggling incident include Monir Ahmed, 32, Tofayel Ahmed, 26, Shahin Ahmed, 25, and Nazrul Islam, 42.
Osmaninagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Arafat Jahan Chowdhury said that separate cases have been filed against them under charges of hijacking and the Special Powers Act.
