Anti-discrimination student movement leaders Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah have moved the High Court to have the Awami League banned.

They filed the writ petition on Monday (October 28).

The government outlawed Awami League’s student front Chhatra League on October 23.

A student-led mass movement toppled the Awami League government on August 5. An interim government headed by Dr Yunus took charge three days later with promises of reforms before arranging a free, fair and neutral election.

Last week, a senior Awami League leader said they were planning to resume political activities and demonstrate against the interim government within two to four weeks.

Party chief Sheikh Hasina fled to India during the student movement. Awami League leaders and activists have since gone into hiding.
