India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that Delhi wants to continue a stable relationship with Dhaka while calling the political instability in Bangladesh an internal matter.
Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar says people-to-people ties between the two countries are good.
Neighbouring countries are “dependent on each other,” he told NDTV on Tuesday (September 17) afternoon.
“We have good trade relations with Bangladesh, and people-to-people ties between the two countries are good. I want the relationship to stay that way,” he said.
Last month, Jaishankar told Parliament that Hasina’s office had requested permission to flee Dhaka for Delhi at "very short notice."
Later, at an all-party briefing, he said that the Indian government was ready to give Hasina time to decide on her next steps, which could include her retirement from politics.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 in the wake of the student uprising, hoping to seek political asylum in London. However, British Home Office sources told NDTV that their regulations prohibit people to travel to that country to seek asylum or temporary refuge. Hasina is currently believed to be in the custody of Indian intelligence agencies.
