The Taliban's supreme court announced Thursday that six people were publicly flogged in northern Afghanistan after being convicted of crimes such as adultery, and other “immoral relations.”
The announcement stated that punishments were executed in the central sports stadium of Sar-e Pul, the capital of the Afghan province of the same name. The provincial governor, judges, security officials, area elders, and members of the public were among the onlookers.
The Taliban’s court also said that each convict was caned 29 to 39 times. They have also been sentenced to imprisonment for one to three years.
However, the identity of the convicts has not been revealed. Earlier, the Supreme Court informed about flogging of three people in Farab province. One of them was a woman.
On August 15, 2021, the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan again. Since then the law of flogging has been re-introduced in the country. Apart from this, public hanging of those accused of major crimes has also been seen.
Human rights organizations around the world have publicly criticized the punishment. They say these are clear violations of human rights.
However, the Taliban said that since Islamic rule had been established in Afghanistan. So everything there will be done according to Islamic law. And since it is said in Islam, the punishment for adultery is public flogging. So action is being taken accordingly.
