Bangladesh women’s cricket team will look to end their losing streak in ICC Twenty20 World Cup in the upcoming 2024 edition of the tournament.

The Tigresses last tasted victory in the competition 10 years ago when they defeated Ireland in the ninth-place play-off match in Sylhet.

Since then, Bangladesh have participated in four more World T20s and played 16 matches in total but never succeeded in winning a game.

Speaking to the media in pre-tournament press conference at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium Tuesday, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty said they want to begin the tournament with a win.

On the opening day of the competition, Bangladesh will face Scotland at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on October 3.

England, the West Indies and South Africa are the other competing teams in the group.

“We want to win the first match. It will be a huge achievement for the team. Then the team will get into a rhythm. We can then dream of something bigger,” said Joty.

“I have played four World Cups but we have never won a game. The last time we won was in the 2014 tournament. We have played well in previous editions but playing well only means something when you can win,” she added.

Bangladesh women’s team head coach Hashan Tillakaratne echoed similar concern with the batting department.

“Our preparation has been good. Batting is an area of concern but there were some positives against Sri Lanka A. We are very much confident. I am sure they will win the game for us,” said formed Sri Lanka cricketer Hashan.

In their second match of the competition, the women in red and green will face England in Sharjah on October 5.

The Tigresses will then take on the Windies on October 10 at the same venue before they play their last Group B match against South Africa in Dubai on October 13.

Bangladesh team will leave Dhaka for the United Arab Emirates Thursday.

The International Cricket Council event this year was initially supposed to be held in Bangladesh.

However, due to the recent political turmoil and travel advisories of a few participating nations, the tournament was shifted to UAE.

Bangladesh Cricket Board still remains its hosts, partnering with the Emirates Cricket Board to ensure the successful completion of the event.
